My deconstruction painting had to be something essential to my nature that was meaningful and perhaps secret to me. Delta dirt seemed an odd choice, but dirt is about as elemental as one can get. But how to portray it in a universal manner? I have a photograph taken by a friend, Bobbie Nell Lewis, of a sunrise in Rosedale, Mississippi. It captures for me the fecundity, the wildness, and the complete control nature has over our lives in the Delta. I wanted to layer these thoughts and emotions on canvas with bold shapes and elegant spaces in between.
